| Introduction
The "blue print" for IFTECH's mission and operational strategy was first created by a special mission on industrial forecasting organized in 1969. IFTECH came to fruition only after a careful study was carried out that examined the necessity of think tanks; this included a trip overseas to the U.S.A. to study leading think tank operations. Following this detailed survey, the mission recommended the creation of an independent, future-oriented institute focused on science, technology and industry, which would incorporate a holistic "soft science" approach by utilizing strengths of the social and natural sciences. IFTECH was originally established under the auspices of the now defunct Science and Technology Agency (STA; in 2001 its operations were subsumed by the Japanese Cabinet Office, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)). Since then, IFTECH has been providing a broad range of: ● Science, technology and innovation policy analyses and studies ● Technical and longitudinal research surveys ● Consultancy services for: - Japanese and overseas' government bodies, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP), and China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) - Semi-government organizations and public institutions, including the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS) - Private companies and NGOs including Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., NEC Corporation, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) located in Washington, DC |
