TECHNOLOGY (IFTECH) Since the establishment in 1971, the Institute for Future Technology (IFTECH) has been serving public and private organizations of Japan as a non-profit think tank. IFTECH was organized as a foundation authorized by the Primer Minister of Japan. The notion of creating an independent think tank for science, technology and industry reflected a consensus among Japanese government and business leaders in the late The blue print for IFTECH was drawn up by a special study mission on industrial forecasting organized in 1969. Following a close survey of leading US think tanks, the mission recommended the creation of an independent, future research institute focused on science, technology and industry within a comprehensive spectrum encompassing the social and natural science. IFTECH was formally set up under the auspices of the Science and Technology Agency. Since then, IFTECH has been providing a broad range of: research / investigation services policy information and advice and consultancy services for government bodies, viz., the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and the Science and Technology Agency many prefectural and municipal governments quasi-government organizations and public institutions such as the National Space Development Agency of Japan, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, and the Japan Science and Technology Corporation private enterprises. By discerning and analyzing emerging socio-economic, policy and managerial trends of high-technology development from a multi-disciplinary perspective, IFTECH provides inputs for public policy making and corporate strategic planning.
